Speakers

Alicia Koo – Soft Rebellions: For When You’re Too Polite To Scream

Typography, especially when used subversively, can shift perspectives and play an active role in cultural movements. In this talk, I explore how type can embody micro-opinions (the small but powerful statements that challenge norms) and how we can use it to communicate loudly without needing to shout.

Soft Rebellions is for creatives learning to speak up, both for themselves and for others. Type plays a powerful role in this: it shapes how our voices are seen, read, and remembered. By treating typography as advocacy, we can rally folks around shared causes and create a greater culture of care.

Genevieve Tyack

Genevieve Tyack is an experience designer based in Vancouver and the principal of Community Studios, a practice specializing in wayfinding and environmental graphic design. Working at the intersection of typography, architecture, and public space, her work focuses on creating intuitive systems that help people navigate complex civic, cultural, and public environments.

From street signs and transit maps to building directories and temporary event signage, typography shapes how we move through space. This talk explores wayfinding as a typographic practice, one shaped by distance, movement, stress, and context, and why successful wayfinding often goes unnoticed. Genevieve examines how letterforms perform in the city, what makes type legible while moving, and how signage functions as a form of urban language that helps people navigate and feel comfortable within the built environment.
