Slow down, breathe in the forest air, and capture the view from one of North Vancouver’s most iconic lookouts. This guided creative hike to Quarry Rock invites participants to explore the intersection of art and nature while moving mindfully through the landscape.

Drawn Outdoors Hike: Quarry Rock Trail
This relaxed hike and sketching experience takes place along the coastal forests and scenic viewpoints of Quarry Rock in Deep Cove. The group will move at an easy pace, pausing at beautiful lookout points to sketch layers of forest, ocean, and sky.
No drawing experience is required. This event is designed for anyone curious about creative expression in nature, whether they are picking up a pencil for the first time or already filling sketchbooks. The focus is on slowing down, observing the environment, and responding to what feels inspiring.
The hike is led by Becky Hill, an illustrator and artist who is passionate about connecting creativity with the outdoors. Becky will share approachable techniques for capturing depth, reflections, and atmosphere, making the experience accessible for beginners while still engaging for experienced sketchers.

Hike Details
The Quarry Rock Trail, part of the Baden Powell Trail, winds through lush West Coast rainforest and opens up to sweeping views of Deep Cove and Indian Arm. The route is approximately 3.9 km out and back, with about 200 metres of elevation gain. Expect stairs, roots, and bridges along the way.
The group will move slowly to allow time for sketching, reflection, and noticing details in the landscape.
Distance: Approximately 3.9 km return
Elevation Gain: Approximately 200 m
Hiking Time: About 1.5 to 2 hours, not including creative stops
Difficulty: Easy to moderate, with some stairs and uneven terrain
Participants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the trail in advance.
Schedule
10:45 a.m. Arrive in Deep Cove
11:00 to 11:15 a.m. Welcome and introductions
11:15 to 11:45 a.m. Begin hiking into the forest
11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. First sketch stop with warm-ups and forest studies
12:30 to 1:00 p.m. Continue hiking toward Quarry Rock
1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Second sketch stop, with snack or lunch at the viewpoint
2:00 to 2:50 p.m. Hike back toward Deep Cove
2:50 to 3:00 p.m. Closing circle and final reflection by the waterfront
If it rains, locations will be adjusted and the group will set up under a picnic shelter near the cove.

This event runs rain or shine and will only be rescheduled in the case of extreme weather.
Getting There
Meeting Point: Panorama Park, near the totem pole in Deep Cove
By Transit:
Take the SeaBus from Waterfront Station to Lonsdale Quay. From there, transfer to Bus 239 or 240 to Phibbs Exchange, then take Bus 212 to Deep Cove. Exit at the final stop on Panorama Drive. The meeting point is a short walk away.
By Car:
Both paid and free parking are available in Deep Cove, but spaces fill quickly on weekends. Arriving early or carpooling is strongly recommended.
Carpooling:
Ride sharing is encouraged, and participants will have the option to offer or request a ride during registration.

Originally from England and now based in Canada, Becky embraces adventure—whether hiking, skiing, or exploring new landscapes—all of which serve as inspiration for her work. Her experience spans multiple industries, from reforestation to tourism, leading projects in branding, media, and illustration.
