Drawn Outdoors Hike: Cleveland Dam + Capilano Canyon

Participants are invited to combine hiking and creativity in this guided adventure around Cleveland Dam and Capilano Canyon in North Vancouver on Sunday, August 10th. The day begins with a gentle one-hour loop along the canyon, followed by a two-hour drawing session overlooking the mountains. Surrounded by the Two Sister mountains, serene water, tall trees, and the sounds of the forest, attendees will enjoy a relaxed drawing session focused on forest landscapes, reflections, and natural textures. They will learn how to capture the stillness and detail of this beautiful setting in their own unique way.

The session will be led by Becky Hill, an illustrator and artist passionate about connecting with the outdoors. Becky will demonstrate techniques for drawing layered forest scenes and creating mood and depth in artwork—perfect for both beginners and experienced artists alike.

Schedule:

  • 10:45 AM – Arrive at trailhead (Cleveland Dam Parking Lot)

  • 11:00 – 11:15 AM – Introductions

  • 11:15 – 11:45 AM – Begin hike along the canyon

  • 11:45 – 12:30 PM – Shorter drawing session in the Canyon

  • 12:30 – 1:00 PM – Continue hiking back to the Dam

  • 1:00 – 1:15 PM – Lunch break

  • 1:15 – 2:45 PM – Longer drawing session

  • 2:45 – 3:00 PM – Closing

(In case of rain, locations will be adjusted.)

Hike Details:

This 3.2-km loop trail near North Vancouver, British Columbia, is generally considered an easy to moderately challenging route, taking an average of 1 hour and 9 minutes to complete. Participants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the trail before booking.

Elevation Gain: 167m

This is a hiking event with a relaxed, community-focused pace. Trails may include uneven terrain or mud, depending on the weather. Anyone unsure about their ability to participate is encouraged to reach out for guidance.

What’s Provided:

  • Sketchbook to take home

  • Pencils, pens, coloured pencils, crayons, and watercolours

  • Cover from the elements/tarp fort (if needed)

  • A community of creative souls

  • A fun time!

What to Bring:

  • Hiking shoes (essential)

  • Warm, weather-appropriate clothing (including waterproof jacket, hat, gloves)

  • Backpack to carry gear and snacks

  • Packed lunch and water bottle

  • Optional: hiking poles, camp stool or mat for sitting

This event runs rain or shine. In the case of extreme weather, it will be rescheduled or refunded.

About Becky Hill

The meeting point is the Cleveland Dam Parking Lot in North Vancouver, located at the north end of Capilano Road. The dam is part of Capilano River Regional Park and is easily accessible by both car and public transit.

By Car:
The parking lot is located at the end of Capilano Road, just past the Capilano Suspension Bridge. Free public parking is available on-site, but arriving early is recommended, especially on weekends.

By Transit:
Take the Seabus from Waterfront Station to Lonsdale Quay, then catch Bus #236 (Grouse Mountain). Get off at the Cleveland Dam stop and walk a few minutes north to the parking lot and dam viewpoint. Travel time from downtown Vancouver is approximately 45–60 minutes.

Ride Sharing:
Participants will have the option to offer or request a ride when registering.

Originally from England and now based in Canada, Becky embraces adventure—whether hiking, skiing, or exploring new landscapes—all of which serve as inspiration for her work. Her experience spans multiple industries, from reforestation to tourism, leading projects in branding, media, and illustration. Through her work, she continually seeks innovative ways to connect people with nature, inspiring better mental well-being and climate action.
