About the Ukrainian Canadian Advocacy Group

The Ukrainian Canadian Advocacy Group is committed to helping Ukrainians impacted by Russia’s cruel and treacherous war. Since February 24, 2022—when Russia escalated its war on Ukraine—millions of Ukrainians have suffered tremendous loss: of their loved ones, their homes, their livelihoods, their freedoms, their autonomy, and their way of life.

Canada is home to one of the largest populations of Ukrainians outside of Ukraine. As a community, Ukrainian Canadians are committed to doing whatever they can to preserve Ukrainian culture and traditions, while also organizing initiatives that provide comfort, care, and aid to Ukrainians directly impacted by the war.

Living in safety during this time of conflict, Ukrainian Canadians refuse to sit idle while people of all ages suffer in Ukraine. Instead, the Ukrainian Canadian Advocacy Group spearheads numerous special projects designed to promote Ukrainian culture and alleviate the suffering of their people. However, this work cannot be done alone.

Programming generally takes the form of free events that bring Ukrainians and non-Ukrainian Canadians together. Highlights include the visual art exhibit War in Living Color at the Kent Gallery in July 2022; a Ukrainian pavilion at the Surrey Fusion Festival in July 2022 (which won the award for Best Pavilion); Black Ribbon Day 2022 in August 2022; Holodomor Memorial Day 2022 in November 2022 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Centre, which honoured the seven million Ukrainians who lost their lives in the man-made famine of 1932–33; and New Lives, Same People at Vancouver’s Beaumont Gallery (May 2023), during which attendees learned about the impact of the war on the lives of everyday Ukrainians through photography, text, and an open mic. The group also organizes anti-war rallies and annual celebrations of Ukrainian embroidered clothing. At all of their events, they receive positive feedback from Ukrainians and non-Ukrainians alike for the ways in which they build community, move hearts and minds, and celebrate dynamic culture.

The Ukrainian Canadian Advocacy Group also runs the Rehabilitation Program for the Children of Fallen Heroes in Ukraine. It is the only program of its kind providing trauma therapy to grieving children in Ukraine, and it is completely organized and funded by the Ukrainian Canadian Advocacy Group. The program brings grieving children to a peaceful retreat in the Ukrainian Carpathian Mountains for two weeks of trauma therapy, art therapy, and extracurricular experiences that equip them with the tools they need to grow into well-adjusted adults. The program is free to the children who participate and brings together experts from around the world.
